Characteristics

The mini Aussie is exactly as its name implies: a small Australian Shepherd with the Aussie’s alertness, energy, happy temperament, high intelligence and reserve, but never shyness, towards strangers. The height of the mini Aussie ranges from 14 to 18 inches with a corresponding weight of approximately 20 to 40 pounds.  Mini Aussies are not recognized by either ASCA, or AKC as a size variety of the Australian Shepherd.  They are of Australian Shepherd heritiage, and as such should display all of the same characteristics.  Our dogs are bred according to MASCA & NAMASCUSA Breed standards for correct Mini Aussie type and conformation.

The Miniature Australian Shepherd’s eager attitude means that working with the mini Aussie is a pleasure, but their intelligence means that obedience training is highly encouraged. The ownership of any dog, especially one of an intelligent breed, should not be taken lightly. Because the Aussie was developed both to herd livestock and guard the farm, the Mini Aussies will display similar traits.  Min Aussies are entirely devoted to their family and can make excellent watch dogs. As with all breeds, early socialization is of the utmost importance.  Mini Aussies are often found excelling in almost all venues of dog sports, Flyball, Frisbee, Obedience, Rally, Agility, and free style.  Many are found on ranches and farms help in the day to day chores.  Whatever you want to do from loving companion to active sports partner check out the Mini Aussie they might just be the breed for you.

Mini Aussies don't require large yards but they do need to have daily exercise.  Long walks or a good game of fetching the ball will work in most cases.  Although active they will settle down in the house and will make good house dogs if given plently of exercise.  Remember they were bred for a job, if you don't provide them with one they will invent one for themselves.  Herding the cat although entertaining to watch is not an activity that your feline friend will find amusing.  They do enjoy the company of other dogs and normally play very well with other family pets.  They are happiest in the company of their family and generally do not enjoy being left in the yard by themselves, they would much rather be with you.
